Is this program for you?

As Mark Twain put it, "Quitting smoking is easy - I've done it hundreds of times."

This is true for most smokers. Smokers usually make a number of attempts before they quit successfully. The problem is not so much in the quitting but in the staying stopped. And the problem of staying stopped is not mainly a consequence of the physical addiction to nicotine. Nicotine withdrawals are in fact quite mild and only take three to four days to overcome. The problem is largely one of maintaining the motivation to stay stopped. The essential difficulty with any addiction is that first you have to stop, then you have to stay stopped and then you will want to stop. If you maintain the motivation for the time it takes, then, as a matter of time, you will eventually stop wanting to smoke. The aim of our treatment program, therefore, is to help you remain motivated during the time it takes to break the habit of smoking.

If you are highly motivated then you don't mind putting up with a certain degree of difficulty. If you were promised a pot of gold if you walked 50km, and you wanted that gold, you may be willing to put up with the discomfort of walking. If half way, you suddenly doubted that the gold would be there at the end of the journey, then suddenly every step you took would be ten times more difficult.

The same thing applies to smoking. Giving up smoking is not difficult in itself. The difficulty lies in the ambivalence. Certainly part of you wants to stop but another part of you wants to keep smoking. This ambivalence throws you into a state of conflict. There's a war inside your head with each side trying to win. Part of you tells you that you're losing your best friend, that it's too difficult, that you need to smoke to cope with life. And the other part says that you are sick of smoking, sick of being unfit, and sick of spending so much money on cigarettes. And so it goes, backwards and forwards. You're an enemy in your own camp so to speak. Take the ambivalence out, and giving up smoking becomes surprisingly easy.

In order to help you stay determined, what the Web Remedies program has done is combine the wonders of modern technology with the various aspects of successful nicotine addiction treatment, in a way that allows you to gain a program that is tailored specifically to meet your individual needs from the comfort and anonymity of your computer.

Program at a glance:

DESIGN A DAILY PROGRAM
An individually tailored program includes items that you consider will help you achieve your goal to stop smoking. You may want to use nicorette, you may want to start an exercise program. From a wide range of items you decide what you need to do each day.

MONITOR YOUR PROGRESS
At the end of each day, you assess your progress and a Motivational Score is calculated for you.

CHART YOUR PROGRESS
Your Motivational Score is mapped against the intensity of cravings you had that day and your general mood score.

INTERPRET YOUR PROGRESS
You will start to recognise your patterns. It will become clear to you what makes it harder and what makes it easier and you can adjust your program accordingly.

GET FEEDBACK ON YOUR PROGRESS
Your scores will automatically give rise to feedback from a counsellor.

'SPEAK' TO A COUNSELLOR
Email a counsellor any time you feel the urge to speak to someone about what you're going through.

INTERACT WITH OTHER MEMBERS
Chat to someone who understands. Connect with people who have something in common with you.

LEARN FROM OTHER MEMBERS
You can read other people's stories and find out what worked for them.

This is a simple but effective program. It will take approximately half and hour of your time and costs less than a week's worth of cigarettes.
